Who are Young Carers?Young carers are ordinary children or teenagers who take physical and/or emotional responsibility for another person. Who do they care for?The person they care for could be a mother, father, brother, sister, granny or granddad or other family member. This person could be ill, have a disability, be experiencing mental distress or suffering from alcohol or drug misuse. What do Young Carers do? As a young carer you may be involved in doing various tasks for the person you are looking after. Some of these might include; washing up, helping some one get dressed, cooking, cleaning, shopping, making cups of tea or keeping someone company. You could be responsible for ensuring a person takes their medication or even look after younger brothers and sisters. What is available for Young Carers in Milton Keynes? With support from Milton Keynes Carers Project, a youth club called Kids Rule MK, has been formed, specifically for local Young Carers. The meetings provide the chance to have fun and to meet other young people in similar circumstances

What goes on at Kids Rule MK? There is a range of activities organised for Kids Rule MK, depending on age. 13+yrs old. Meet every Thursday evening at the Mathiesen Centre, at Bradville. Refreshments are provided and activities include; Arts & Crafts, Pool and Sports. It’s also a time to discuss any personal difficulties and for checking out support and useful information. The group also get the chance to go Bowling, Quasar and enjoy other activities.
What else is there? Under 8 yrs old. Occasional family events are planned to enable children, young people and their parents to meet together for support and information. The Base. An activity based scheme for Young Carers, aged 8 – 14yrs, run and staffed by the Milton Keynes Play Association. Activities take place during school holidays, with individual days during half term and a play scheme during the summer break.

Costs and Transport Although we aim to provide activities for Young Carers free of charge there may be times when a contribution towards costs is requested. Transport is available for some events but is limited and cannot be guaranteed. Useful contact telephone numbers for further support Brook
