Shaping Local Health - Middleton Hall, CentreMK - Tuesday 26 July 2005
Organised by the Milton Keynes Patient and Public Involvement in Health
(PPIH) organisation, this event brought together over 60 organisations with an
interest in health. The Carers Project display proved very popular
especially as, along with staff members, there were members from the 'Crafty Carers' group
demonstrating their work and talking about the benefits of the group. As
one member said, "... coming to the group is better than a bottle of
anti-depressants!".
Crafty Carers Group launched
A small group of enthusiastic Carers has established a group
for those interested in a variety of crafts - embroidery, patchwork,
cross-stitch etc. Meetings, twice a month, are being arranged and will be
held at the Carers Project offices. The group has benefited from the
generous donation of equipment and a sewing machine from the John Lewis
Partnership and these are being well used by the members of the group.
Future plans include trips to craft exhibitions. For more details, contact Katy

Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act
Campaign Success as the Carers Bill becomes an Act! The Bill was
granted Royal Assent on Thursday 22 July and is expected to come into
force on 1 April 2005. The Department of Health is due to issue draft
guidance in the autumn. The new Act will give Carers more choice and
opportunities to lead a more fulfilling life. It will:
place duties on local authorities to tell Carers about their rights
place a duty on local authorities to consider, when carrying out a Carers Assessment, whether the Carer works or wishes to work, wishes to study of have some leisure activities
gives local authorities strong powers to enlist the help of health, housing and education authorities in providing support for Carers
The Carers Project has begun a campaign to identify what difference the Act is likely to have for local Carers and how local statutory services are able to respond to this opportunity. Key to its successes will be how health and social care services are able to work together to identify Carers and to provide them with information and access to support.
